Clinical information

Patient is a 72 year old male that presented with hand pain with functional grip and playing the piano at a church organist/pianist. The patient had difficulty with opening bottles and use of his upper extremity with activities of daily living. The patient denies any neurologic symptoms in his affected upper extremity.

Brief description

MSK US of the 1st dorsal wrist compartment was performed in addition to assessment of the articular structures of the 1st digit. Dynamic assessment of the 1st compartment was performed as well.

Conclusion

With this ultrasound examination we see osteoarthritis of the thumb at the CMC joint as well at tenosynovitis of the 1st dorsal wrist compartment affecting the extensor pollicis brevis and the abductor pollicis longus tendons.
